The Montana Smart Growth Coalition was created in 1999 by a coalition of 40 diverse organizations to protect the things we all love about Montana as the state develops and grows. We work to protect and enhance Montana’s unique quality of life, big sky, lakes and rivers, and wildlife while helping our communities grow sustainably and affordably.
The Montana Smart Growth Coalition is a uniquely inclusive organization that works with people and groups from all sides to provide local communities with the tools they need to take control over their own future. We also work to ensure that state policies do not encourage inefficient, sprawling development patterns that shift the hidden costs of growth to taxpayers, neighbors, and senior water rights holders. We believe that smart growth means prioritizing development in and around existing cities and towns by making it faster, easier, and more profitable.
In 2010, MSGC began a unique partnership with the Western Environmental Law Center (WELC) when WELC became MSGC’s fiscal sponsor. This partnership joins WELC’s legal expertise with MSGC’s policy and land use experience. WELC and MSGC have already begun combining the expertise of our staff in order to help Montana counties adopt zoning and subdivision regulations to protect critical wildlife habitat throughout the state.
