Montana Transportation Choices
Transportation Choices to Enhance Community Character,
Public Safety, Economic Vitality, and Natural Landscapes in Montana
Montana's state transportation program represents a major force shaping the state's cities, towns, and countryside as well as a major influence on the state's economy and quality of life. The Montana Transportation Choices Study evaluates the state's program in light of current guidelines, goals, and requirements contained in federal transportation laws, and compares Montana's transportation program to best practices among the states in key policy areas of importance to Montana's citizens.

Details of the study findings have been published in a set of issue papers addressing issues and topics identified by stakeholders from across Montana:

This project was organized and funded through the Western Montana Alliance for Sustainable Transportation (WestMAST), in conjunction with the Montana Smart Growth Coalition.

The 2001 State of Growth in Montana:
The State and Impact of Growth and Planning in Montana

This report details the impacts that Montana's unplanned growth and sprawl has had on farming and ranching, affordable housing, transportation, and on twelve of the state's fastest growing counties. The purpose of the report is to bring together, for the first time, data and information relating to how Montana is growing, including information available from the 2000 Census.

American Planning Association Study:
Montana Planning and Land Use Laws
In 1999, MSGC contracted the American Planning Association's Research Department to conduct an in-depth study of Montana's planning and land-use laws in order to help us find ways to improve existing laws so that Montanans have the tools and opportunity to plan for future growth in ways that protect farm- and ranchlands, hometowns, and provide affordable housing for all.
